Meaningful Fabric
When I’m picking out fabric for my next quilt, I usually enter the
quilt shop
with
an open mind toward color scheme. I happily
wander around the store until a fabric
bolt speaks to me. Over
the years, I’ve noticed the designs and colors attracting my
attention frequently have a deeper significance— a deep cobalt
blue
print reminds
me of the lake where I spent much of my childhood;
bold batiks
call to mind
tie-dyeing experiences (although my attempts never came
close to the fantastic options
available today); and homespun plaids conjure up images of a favorite flannel shirt I wore on a
yearly camping trip. To me, choosing meaningful material is part of what makes a quilt special. It’s also what makes selecting the fabrics and quilts featured in Fabric Trends such a pleasure.

Of course, some collections are extraordinary on their own because of the causes they support. In recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re showcasing three quilts: English Manor Gardens, Berry Fondue, and Ladies in the Pink, made from fabric with ties to breast cancer-related organizations. The companies behind these collections are generously donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of these designated fabrics to breast cancer research and/or care. In addition, check out the Rave Reviews or some fun pink tools.
The featured designers in this issue fit into our “pink” theme as well. Loralie Harris created the On the Mend collection for Loralie Designs showing her charming signature ladies who never lose their spunky smiles as they triumph over breast cancer. She even offers a behind-the-scenes look at how pencil sketches become the finished fabric panels for which she is known. Luana Rubin, fabric designer and owner of eQuilter.com, discusses the influences of her creative background, her company’s charitable focus, and her latest collection, Joie de Vivre, described as having “an art nouveau influence.”
For those yearning for a little “something extra,” look no further—we have you covered. In Trendwatch, industry expert Ellie Joos offers a virtual tour of Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis, noting hot colors, pattern styles, and techniques she saw at the show. A new feature, The Embellishment Corner, discusses how to top a quilt with the proverbial frosting on the cake…crystals! Whether used to enhance a focal point with glitz or provide subtle, elegant sparkle, these little gems are a fun way to finish off your next project.
And finally, remember to mark your calendar for an annual mammogram. It’s too important to put off, even for a trip to the fabric store.

English Manor Garden
by Patti Carey for Northcott

Around the River Bend
by Janet Page Kessler for Benartex
Deborah Baronas' Riverbed collection for Benartex reflects her artistic training as a fine oil painter at the Rhode Island School of Design. The fabric motifs have the soft, flowing look of oil paintings and depict Deborah's memories of time spent with her father along the Massachusetts river where she was raised. She calls the fabric a collection of memories caught in time: dragonflies poise in the air, minnows swim through the water, and rocks shimmer in the sun. Hand-painted sky and water textures complete the picture.

Berry Fondue
by Luana Rubin for eQuilter.com
Luana Rubin’s Joie de Vivre collection for Robert Kaufman fabrics has an Art Nouveau influence and a deliciously warm color palette. The quilt is inspired by a raspberry and chocolate dessert with a little crème anglaise on top—shades of pink, chocolate brown, peach and cream whipped up into a sweet confection! For every yard sold of Luana's fabric, fifty cents per yard is being generously donated to http://www.bcrfcure.org to help find a cure for breast cancer.

Tropical Paradise
by Margie Hankins for Textile Creations
Tropical Paradise is a rick rack effect of colorful fabrics. The pattern represents shades of the new browns and blues. The construction is simple and the excitement comes to life when viewed as a finished product revealing the color effects of the pattern. The added glory is placing the frames of texture to the quilt top. The hand painted Tropical Paradise Florals deserve the attention that is shown when framed by the texture of Cho-Cho and enlightened by the citrus power of lime as the background.

Summer Garden
by Beth Bruske for Telegraph Road Studios
Inspired by seventeenth century home furnishings patterns, Beth Bruske designed A Fanciful of Flowers collection for Telegraph Road Studios as an adaptation of styles
from Indian and Euro-American civilization. The color palette is a blend of warm and cool spice tones and the focus print is filled with flowering trees and birds, reminiscent of India’s seventeenth century prints. This line is exotic in both style and color.

The Essence of Matisse
by Amanda Begliomini for Blank Quilting
Similar in style to French Impressionist painter Henri Matisse, Blank Quilting’s Matisse Collection uses flat, angular patterns and bright colors. The composition creates layers of color and dimension in lively all-over prints. The Essence Collection by Karen Combs was inspired by the overlapping ripples generated in a pool of water when it rains. Imagining those rippling pools filled with light and color became the basis for
a complex and vibrant design.

Ladies in the Pink
by Loralie Harris for Loralie Designs
Loralie Harris designed the On the Mend collection based on personal experience. “In 1999, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next year was filled with countless trips to countless doctors, tests, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. When I began to design fabric years later, it was in my heart to design a collection that would honor and cheer ladies touched by this experience. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this collection will benefit breast cancer research and awareness. "

Prussian Pride
by Dolores Smith and Sarah Maxwell for Windham Fabrics
Prussian blue, a vibrant blue with a slight undertone of green, was a popular color in European and American textiles during the mid 1800s. When fabric designer Margo Krager obtained a well preserved fabric sample book at an estate sale by Dargate Auction House in 1997, she discovered a wealth of swatches from circa 1830 French dressgoods. Subsequently, Margo designed her Dargate Prussian Blues collection f with vintage colors and patterns from a bygone era for today’s quilters.

Dreamcatcher
by Anne Slater for M&S Textiles
Australian Aboriginal designs arise from a heritage that goes back 5000 years. Much of Aboriginal history exists in the form of The Dreaming Stories, which explain all of life and are central to their culture and relationship to the natural world. Aboriginal art developed from the use of Dreaming Story symbols to tell stories. Today sand paintings and ground mosaics have been replaced by paintings on canvas. The abstract dot-and-circle designs, based on traditional Dreaming Stories, have become a trademark of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement.
